Choose your mount type first
The correct measuring method depends on where the product will sit.
Inside mount measuring steps
Best when the window frame has enough usable depth.
1. Measure the width in three places
Measure inside the frame at the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest width.
2. Measure the height in three places
Measure from the top inside frame down to the sill on the left, center and right. Record the tallest height.
3. Measure the usable depth
Measure the clear depth at the top of the frame where the headrail or cassette will sit. Note locks, handles, cranks, alarms or trim that reduce usable space.
4. Do not take your own deductions
Record true field measurements. Final production allowances should be confirmed based on product type and mount style.
Outside mount measuring steps
Best for shallow frames, more privacy or wider light coverage.
1. Decide where the headrail will sit
Choose whether the blind or shade will mount above the trim, on the trim or on another flat surface.
2. Measure the finished width
Measure the full left-to-right coverage area. Extra overlap can help reduce side light and improve privacy.
3. Measure the finished height
Measure from the selected headrail location down to the sill, apron or desired bottom point.
4. Check projection and obstacles
Write down trim thickness, tile, handles, cranks, door hardware or other protrusions that may affect brackets or operation.
Quick measuring checklist
Use this list before submitting measurements or booking a consultation.
- - Use a firm metal tape measure.
- - Measure every window, even if two windows look identical.
- - Write width first, then height.
- - Record measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch.
- - Label each room and window location clearly.
- - Take photos of unusual windows, arches, handles, tile, trim or obstructions.
- - Ask us to confirm final sizes if the window is shallow, uneven, oversized or shaped.
